I am currently pursuing a Master of Engineering degree specializing in Computer Engineering and will be soon applying for the Computer Engineering Ph.D. program with the plan of working with VR/Mixed Reality. I am currently taking this course because I am interested in learning more about how media has changed our perspective on things as technology has evolved, and more importantly, I want to find a path that allows me to combine my interests in technology and art. I have a lot of interest in game design and drawing, and this class seems to mix the topics quite a bit, so I wanted to explore what this course has to offer. Also, as someone who does invest a lot of personal time in art, I am curious about how intellectual property rights work, especially since I make a lot art that is inspired by actual games that I play and the shows that I watch.

A challenge that I face with the media I use is something that has become much more prominant online: the use of AI to generate content. In the context of art, AI-generated art has become very popular and is highly questionable ethically in relation to originality and author/ownership. For these AI art generators to work, it has to amass a large amount of resources and references to "learn" from in order to mimic a particular style. This is especially a problem because this means people have been feeding in art of particular artists (without their permission) to create art very similar in style to artists that have spent years and years honing and perfecting their style, so it's a bit of a slap in the face to these people because now a machine has the ability to copy their style completely. Having been exposed to this online, I am curious to learn more about the ethics/morals of creating AI art and how this affects copyright and intellectual property rights, especially for artists that provide their artwork as a service.
